[ Aether's a funny sort of man, really: capable of great insights, with a blind spot when it comes to himself. On the one hand, he's always grounded, and has perfectly applicable advice for others around him when they need it. On the other hand, he doesn't seem to realize when he himself is the one who needs that advice, and so he's always doggedly trying to be the person that others think he is, even when he tells himself that he doesn't need to be anything but what he knows he is.
Anyway — sure, he doesn't seem to have realized how much he's needed a break, but the therapeutic effects of taking one still work on him regardless. He's smiling softly by the time he settles back into Alhaitham's couch, a second drink in hand, eyes closed as he listens to the slightly muffled sound of Kaveh playing sitar with Paimon in another room. Drinking and relaxing in their shared home has been nice, and it's actually true that, unlike most other people, Aether often finds Alhaitham's blunt intractability rather soothing. There's something very comforting about being with a man no one in the world could possibly influence; it makes Aether less doubtful about what he is and isn't allowed to say. ]
...I didn't know Kaveh was so good with instruments. Though I guess it checks out — he is very artsy, and all...
[ Aether takes a sip from his cup, lounging cross-legged, about half-relaxed from how he usually is. He did splurge just slightly — walked in and ask Lambad for his finest bottle of whatever he had in stock. It's hardly a problem when the traveler has so many riches from having raided so many ancient temples for treasure over the years.
The ancient civilizations of Teyvat won't miss what they've had stored away, he figures. As for their secrets, they are safe with him. He turns his golden eyes to Alhaitham, who has had his undivided attention for the last half-hour or so. ]
[The way Alhaitham showed he cared about other people was usually cryptic at best and at arms length and terrible worded at worst. Aether was weirdly in neither group. Usually the smaller man could understand what he's getting at and follow his logic. It was nice in a way Alhaitham wasn't always used to. So when he offered to slow down and actually spend the night, Haitham found himself releasing a breath he didn't realize was being held. Knowing that's he'd be there so soon was also relieving. There wouldn't be time to dwell on other parts of the earlier conversation, either.
The flip side of this was not warning Kaveh whatsoever, yet again, that they were having company. He spent so long in and out of reading, thinking about Aether coming over while sending the messages back and forth, that he didn't bother with sending one to warn Kaveh. It went over much better (quieter) than he expected when the traveler and his companion showed up for the evening. Haitham wondered if he should be concerned that his housemate had come to realized Aether and Paimon were the only people Haitham ever extended such an invitation to.]
I picked up a few books on it and read through them. Although they were thorough in their explanations, No. I don't. I've never put the knowledge to practical use.
[It was nice to hear Kaveh play in the background while he read some nights. Tonight was no different. Alhaitham found himself looking up from his book every so often to look toward the hallway he was Paimon were down, and then over to glance at Aether. He had no plans to have the traveler to himself like this, but he would be lying if he said it wasn't nice to sit with just the two of them. A small pile of two books were picked out and sitting on the corner of the table a head of time for Paimon to take with her when they left in the morning.
The hand that wasn't holding his book held his wine, Alhaitham leaning back with his legs stretched out off the side, legs crossed at the ankle down on the floor. He was comfortable and could turn his full attention on Aether now. He really hadn't been paying attention to the book since the other's arrival, so it was easy to let his mind drift instead to noticing how little space the other took up.]
Do you play something? I don't think I'm mistaken in seeing you play something in the forest before.
[ Aether's eyes widen slightly for a moment — and then he relaxes, and laughs. When could Alhaitham have possibly seen him in the woods with his lyre? It must have been around when he was helping the Aranara with their various needs, beating back the Withering and revitalizing the forest. If they did cross paths, how did he miss the man? (Well, Alhaitham kind of blends in with the leafy green foliage, to be fair.) ]
You've seen me playing? I didn't think anyone was listening... I'd have given you a better show if I'd known you were there.
[ Smiling, Aether pulls the vintage lyre the Aranara gave him from his bag, strumming his fingers lightly over the strings to show Alhaitham the instrument. ]
The Aranara taught me how to play this lyre. And a few of their songs, too.
[ To any adult from Sumeru, who would have grown up with tales of Aranara befriending children, this is about as preposterous as saying that fairy tales are real — but then, of course, Aether is exactly the kind of man who would somehow prove that fairy tales are real. He plucks out a few notes on his lyre, matching Kaveh's melody from the other room, but he stops after a moment; evidently, he's content to let Kaveh continue being their musical accompaniment for the evening. ]
...Sometimes I feel like Sumeru gave me so much. [ A little laugh. ] Not that the other nations didn't — but I left the forest and the desert with so many... memories.
[He tipped his head in a noncommittal answer. Haitham's seen Aether in passing when he was on his way to other places, but never interfering. Music in the forest wasn't wholly unheard of for many reasons, but the time he heard it from someone he knew stuck in the back of his mind until now.
Hearing it was due to the aranara caught his attention, turning his head to look more at Aether. It wasn't surprising. If anyone was going to interact with them in adulthood, he was in the company of all the ones he's immediately pin for it. The books and papers written have obviously been numerous. Alhaitham knew as much as a person who's never seen them could know.
His attention was stolen by the appearance of the lyre, finally closing his book and setting it off to the side. With his headphones off and sitting away from him, he could hear every vibration. Leaning back, he rested his head on his hand, elbow rested on the back of the couch, his eyes on Aethers fingers and how he picked and plucked the notes. Once the accompaniment ends, his gaze lifts to Aether proper.]
You went through a lot here. [He could have said 'we', he acknowledges to himself. He may have stumbled on him by change the first time, and spent a significant leg of the Sumeru journey together, but Haitham knew there was far more to it for the other than there was for him.]
I think everyone got used to seeing you around. That does typically invoke a feeling of acceptance and belonging. They still talk about you now and then.
[ Alhaitham doesn't say it, no, but he understands it without it being said — he went through a lot in Sumeru, sure, but so did everyone else. The Haitham that Aether met is not the same Haitham as the one who is sitting in the couch across from him now, and everyone else who went on their journey was changed for the better for it, too.
It's kind of funny to hear that they all talk about him when he's not around, though. ]
That almost makes it sound like I'm dead...!
[ Aether just laughs. He plucks out a few more notes on his lyre, letting the notes resonate warmly in the air. Alhaitham is a bit more sensitive to sounds and touch than most people, he notes; his eyes scan the rare sight of the scribe's bare ears, and his soundproof headphones on the couch cushion next to him. Softening slightly, Aether lowers his voice to a tone and pitch that would be more pleasing to Alhaitham's delicate ears. ]
...I'll always come back to Sumeru whenever I'm invited, you know. If you need me, I'll be here.
[ And on that gentle note — as if he's concerned he'll startle the other man, Aether gets up, his vintage lyre cradled in his arm, and crosses the short distance to the other couch, so that he's seated directly next to Alhaitham, close enough that their arms touch when the traveler turns and offers his lyre to the scribe. ]
[ He noticed the change in Aether's voice. Of course, he noticed. Without his special headphones on, all the sounds of the house were louder and clearer to him. Aether's tenor softened, and Alhaitham's gaze lifted to find those golden eyes. That courtesy and flexibility is part of why he was important to so many people. It wasn't lost on him that Aether chose to be here with just him instead of anyone else.
His gaze only leaves him to look at the lyre, silently contemplating everything in his mind. Didn't he just say that was a gift from the aranara? It was something that would give most other's pause to consider the weight of it. Alhaitham reaches his hand out toward him with little hesitation.]
You don't have to quiet yourself. I took them off because it's just the two of us.
[Aether wasn't like Kaveh. He didn't expect yelling or complaining in loud voices. The Traveler would leave again at morning light, and part of him wanted to listen and remember.
The lyre was held and pulled close to him, turning it into its proper position with this attention down to correct his posture.]
I don't see the need to call you. We've had things under control since the restructuring. It's just nice to see you when you do decide to come around. Even Lord Kusanali enjoyed your appearance on her birthday.
[He plucks out easy cords first, testing his own ability to translate word to action and also how it sounds with his headphone off. The sound and vibration was clearer, but his fingers felt clumsy trying to find the right notes naturally. After being sufficiently disappointed in himself, he hands it back carefully, offering it with two hands.]
[ Aether laughs, rich and melodious and a little teasing; it's a bit of a rare sound coming from him. The traveler is often cheerful and smiles frequently, but he rarely laughs. He takes his lyre back with another low chuckle, running his fingers over it again, as if tending to a lover's body. He grins at Alhaitham over its deep brown frame. ]
Sorry. I'm being mean. I just wanted to see how you look when you aren't good at something. But that wasn't bad for a beginner.
[ Alhaitham is so often like that, after all: seemingly effortlessly perfect, at least from the outside. And Aether has often benefited from that veneer of perfection — but he's never actually asked for it of Alhaitham. Doesn't expect it. Maybe he of all people knows how heavy perfection is as a crown to bear.
He plucks out a few notes on the lyre again, then sets it aside. ]
Should I try to come by more often? I liked Nahida's birthday. It was fun.
[Alhaitham looks at Aether, his eyes narrowing at that laugh with a smile pulling at his own lips. He could not help but silently watch the other, absently basking in Aether's delight, even when it was at his own expense. This little troublemaker.]
Coming from the ever perfect Knight of Flowers, I'll take that as a compliment.
[He could imagine most people who knew him would say otherwise. He was good at the things he put his mind to, but his faults and shortcomings were many. Getting Aether to relax doesn't seem to be one of them, at least as far as that look on his face seemed to say. ]
I like seeing you, but don't neglect your duties for it.
[He didn't see any point in beating around the bush. If anyone else wanted to see Aether, they can ask for it themselves. Being able to sit here with him with his headphones off, drinking wine and hearing him laugh, it was a comfort that Alhaitham hadn't realized until that moment that he needed as well.]
[ Alhaitham's expressions are subtle, often nearly imperceptible — but after all the time they've spent together, Aether likes to think that he's learned to read the man. The faint curve at the corners of his lips, the hint of warmth in his striking eyes — turquoise with a brilliant orange ring at the core — all these things together are signs of a contented Alhaitham.
It's nice, really. To have brought him some measure of happiness, however small.
Maybe it's the drink that motivates Aether to be somewhat spoiled, somewhat impetuous — maybe it's only the atmosphere. But, whatever the case, the traveler gently lays his head upon Alhaitham's shoulder and murmurs: ]
I like seeing you too, Haitham. I always do.
[ Then he closes his eyes, still listening to the faint sounds of Kaveh's music from the other room. ]
[ Alhaitham closed his eyes. There was usually something distant about Aether that having him so close wasn't taken for granted. The weight of his head against his shoulder was comforting, but the use of his name is what made it feel like something was fluttering in his gut that only showed as a slow release of breath.
Anyone else would have gotten a sarcastic and too pointed retort for such familiarity. For Aether, Haitham merely watched him, looking down at his face, how angelic this little troublemaker could be when he was relaxed. Reaching the opposite hand over, he used the tip of his finger to move Aether's bangs from his face, giving him a better view, letting the finger drag down his cheek and then back to his lap again.]
I didn't think you were the type to get affectionate when you're drunk. Does this always happen, or is this a special occasion?
[The question was mostly out of curiosity. It would be good to know if the Little Star was going to need to be carried out of certain situations before he flirted up the wrong person.]
[ Aether has to repress another laugh as Alhaitham's finger tickles his brow and cheek, changing the way his hair falls over his face. It's an unexpectedly gentle gesture coming from the scribe, but it's also not the scribe's first time being gentle with Aether like this; vaguely, the traveler recalls a quiet night in Aaru Village, when Nahida was still in captivity and they had all still been at odds with one another, and Aether had stayed close to Alhaitham all evening because he couldn't tell what Cyno and Candace and Dehya were thinking. But he knew, at the very least, what Alhaitham's position was. ]
Do I seem like someone who does this whenever he gets drunk?
[ Alhaitham watched him drink at the end of their celebratory party, anyway; no matter how much he drinks, the traveler usually holds his liquor quite well, to the point that Dehya had complimented him on it with a sort of attaboy pride. Since he's leaning on Alhaitham's shoulder, it's an easy thing for him to trace the path of the scholar's arm down to his hand.
Gently, Aether rests his palm atop Alhaitham's knuckles, invading his space bit by careful bit. Troublemaker indeed. ]
Maybe it's only happening because you're a special person.
[ Alhaitham remembered those times. Given the situation, he also couldn't tell what the others would do, and the animosity between the desert and the akademiya left him at a disadvantage. Being with Aether was more grounding than he was ever going to admit. He made a tumultuous time in his life easier and stayed with him until they could successfully save Sumeru and the life Alhaitham had built for himself. It was something that stayed in the back of his mind often.]
Not according to my memory.
[He answers in a lower voice, turning to dip his head to press into Aether's hair. The hand that Aether was touching turns, his fingers brushing against his and slotting to bring their palms together. ]
It's rare that you want to be completely alone with someone.
[It comes out as an observation more than an answer; It was an unasked question that finally had a vague answer. The situation they found themselves in was intentional, but he hadn't pinned down how intentional. It was rare when he was the one who was having to catch up to someone else's thoughts or feelings.]
[ Alhaitham's hand in his, his nose pressed lightly into Aether's hair, where he smells sweetly of fresh grasses and foreign flowers from distant shores — these small gestures feel almost like a victory to the traveler. Aether laughs a little, generously allowing Alhaitham to partake as he pleases, until he's had his fill. He likes this, these gentle touches, and Haitham's inquisitive nosing. He's almost like an enormous cat. ]
We can still be alone together.
[ Aether's tone is low and lilting. He brushes his thumb over Alhaitham's knuckles, squeezing their palms still closer. ]
How about we go up to your room? Or do you want something... quieter?
[ Kaveh and Paimon likely won't emerge from their musical playroom for some time, and even if they do, and find Alhaitham and Aether missing, perhaps they won't question it — there are many reasons the scribe and the traveler could have slipped out for a bit of night air, or to sober up. Neither of them would have cause to check Alhaitham's room.
Unless, of course — Aether's teasing tone seems to imply — the scribe wants more privacy for this intentional situation they're in. ]
[ Alhaitham lifts his head to peer down at the smaller man, scrutinizing his words. What could be quieter than his room? Or maybe he should be asking where? A short glance was given toward the hall that lead to the room where the other two were, turning his head back to Aether again in consideration.
Normally, he wouldn't care either way. He still technically didn't. It was his house and he was allowed to do whatever he pleased there. If that meant absconding away with The Traveler to his room, then that was his prerogative. The downside to this was Kaveh would not hold back at yelling at him later about being inconsiderate, and Haitham would only half listen before tuning him out completely.]
If you have an option for something more quiet, I'm open to it.
[The traveler's body and sent was like a roadmap of his travels. If he were more versed in scents, he probably could have traced those experiences all over him. It made him curious in the ways books did. The brush of his thumb and the strength in that hand got Alhaitham leaning in and then quickly out to look forward instead. None of that. Not yet.]
[ Faintly amused by Alhaitham's muted, buttoned-up reaction, Aether calmly elaborates on his plans: ]
Dunyarzard Homayani gave me a small one-bedroom cottage when I was investigating some things in Sumeru City. It's actually right down the street from your house. I think she's forgotten about it herself...
[ A slightly wry smile punctuates this remark. To be fair, Dunyarzad is a sweet young woman who would never ask for something back from a benefactor, but it's also equally true that her family is so wealthy that they're probably not even keeping track of that tiny property. An enviable position by any standard. ]
So no one else knows that it's mine. What do you think? Doesn't it sound like the perfect getaway?
[ ...The building in question is pretty tiny, though. But that sounds Aether just fine! ]
[He recalled the name, or more, it was difficult not to know the name. He was aware Dehya worked for her for quite some time and knew about well known things around her, but didn't realize how charitable the wealthy woman had been to The Traveler. He really did know all sorts of people, didn't he?
Glancing toward the door, he didn't need to think too much on the questions posed. For him, he already decided that being alone with Aether was something he wanted. Looking back, Alhaitham nods, lowering himself just enough to brush his lips over the other's forehead.]
I think that will suit our needs just fine.
[His free hand reached out for his headphones, the one holding Aether's hand squeezing it before he released him and started to move to stand. It would just be a short walk, and then he wouldn't have to let him go, he told himself, eyes closed as he slipped the devices back over his ears.
Alhaitham turns back toward the divan as if he forgot something, bending down to deliver a chaste kiss to the other. There and gone, a soft gaze lingering on Aether even as he pulled away to stand properly once more.]
Is this common for you? Collecting property and assets in every nation you visit?
[ They head out the door. As promised, it's only a short walk down from Alhaitham's home, past two stores, to the little cottage that the Homayanis own and have loaned to Aether. The warmth of Alhaitham's hand and the soft touch of his kiss seem to linger on the traveler's skin as they walk, but Aether doesn't do anything so unsightly as cling to Alhaitham's arm as they walk, mindful of the fact that many eyes may be on the former Grand Sage as he makes his way through Sumeru, and while he probably doesn't care, he surely doesn't need more rumors about him. Instead, Aether saunters confidently ahead, leading the way to his address. ]
Have I been collecting property...? [ He laughs. ] I think I only have "property" in Sumeru, actually. I acquired the Serenitea Pot in Liyue, but that's more of an artifact that travels with me, not... land in a physical sense.
[ He gets to the door and unlocks it swiftly, opens the door. As promised, it's only a small one-bedroom apartment, with just enough space for a table, two chairs, a little shelf, and doors to the bathroom and kitchen respectively. Not as nice as Alhaitham's home, no, but there's also nothing particularly wrong with it. The furnishings provide a warm enough atmosphere. ]
[The walk there was short, but he made sure Aether was in his eyesight the whole time. Alhaitham didn't care much about what people saw or what they said about him. This late at night, anything could start rumors, but what rumors about him and Aether would he truly find reprehensible? 'The two responsible for freeing the archon found absconding to their secret rendezvous spot'? If they had time to monitor how he spent his personal time, they had time to correct and send in a properly filled out form.
Still, he was silent and allowing, sitting down in one of the chairs once they were inside and alone once more. He wouldn't want to put extra weight on Aether's shoulders anyway. The space was small, but once again he slipped his headphones off and set the whole device on the table, turning to Aether once they were aside and reaching his arms out to him.]
The teapot counts. It's several pieces of property all in one, and not small in any way. The creation of private pockets in space is a phenomenon that has been studied, but to no incredible depths. The scholars of the akademiya lack the ability to replicate it by human, visionless means.
Regardless. [His tone softens.] It's interesting to learn that your accommodations have varied as much as I thought it probably has.
[ For a moment, Aether almost thinks that he should put on some tea for Alhaitham, go about the mechanical duties of a host towards their guest — but then Alhaitham simply reaches his hands out, and the traveler almost has to stifle a laugh. He just looks so cute like that. Does Haitham know, really, just how cute he is in general? He's such a big, strong man by all outward appearances — but looking like that, with soft expectant eyes and outstretched arms — for a moment, Aether finds it hard not to pull him in for a kiss and several reassuring hugs. ]
...I don't need to own things.
[ A bizarre sort of thing to say, but one which is undoubtedly true, and which few people in the world would utter, given the systems in which they live. Smiling, Aether steps calmly into Alhaitham's embrace, and wraps his arms around the man's shoulders in turn, content to be wrapped up and lifted into the man's lap. ]
But if I did — [ indulgently, he lets one thumb brush along Alhaitham's bottom lip ] — I think... it wouldn't be so bad to claim you.
[ He lowers his voice to a soft murmur. ]
Of all the things I've come across, I want you the most.
[If he had even the slightest inkling that Aether thought he was cute, it would be a rare moment where he didn't have a good retort for something someone said. Luckily, he doesn't have to have that mental scramble, instead wrapping his arms around the other as he came in closer. His arms settled around his waist, finding comfort in the weight that he pulls into his lap and close against him.
He could agree. There was no reason to own anything in excess. The only thing he seemed to have in great number were books, but they were valuable and his one indulgence, much to Kaveh's annoyance when they had to find new places to store them. Besides said books, he never put much thought into owning or having pass the necessities.
Whatever response he could have given was pushed aside when Aether turned the topic of claiming to a person, particularly him. His head turned more to look at Aether, feeling that finger and bringing one of his hands up to place behind it as he brushes a light kiss against his fingertip.]
You'll be luck to know that I am available for ownership. The payment model accrues interest the longer the product is left alone, however, so you'll have to take care to visit or ask me to come with you. The occasional book from places you travel to also can settle the cost, naturally.
[Payment models seem to work in his eyes. After all, it keeps Kaveh in place instead of making more trouble for himself. Despite, he complains about wanting to move out and failing. See it works.]
[ Aether laughs at Alhaitham's offer of a "payment plan" — how can he not? It's so charming, so slightly insolent, in exactly the way that the scholar is always charmingly insolent.
The traveler can't resist any longer. He really does give Alhaitham that kiss on the forehead he was thinking about, right in the middle of his brow where his hair usually falls into his face. Then he gives Alhaitham another kiss for his nose, and still one more kiss for his cheek — just a brief little peck, sweet and warm. ]
You're so cute. [ Oops, he's said it out loud now. Haitham gets another nose kiss. ] So, so cute.
I'll accept your offer, Alhaitham. I think that's a payment plan I can work my life around.
[ Solemn, stoic Alhaitham, demanding more "payment" the longer he's left alone... the thought of him being so pleasantly needy makes Aether feel more fond than his heart can bear. A boyfriend who wants attention and company and the occasional gift is exactly the sort of thing that Aether likes to worry about, though, so he tips his face slightly to the side and leans in to press one more warm kiss to Alhaitham's lips, lingering this time, so that he can know he's been fully claimed. ]
[Alhaitham's brows furrow, his brain stalling at the notion of being cute. To have it sealed with a kiss to his nose was like insult to injury. They were barely past the accepting of the relationship, and Aether was already teasing him. Personally, he wouldn't have it any other way, but that was also embarrassing to think about.
His eyes were close only momentarily before they were fluttering open once more, seeing Aether come in and closing them yet again. The contract was sealed with the warmth of lips over his. Haitham leaned into the kiss and the comfort of Aether being so much closer than he had been in a long time. His arms remained where they were, content to hold him as they were and linger in that kiss.
His patience (and worry) rewarded him. He was properly claimed.]
Are there any secret crushes others have on you that I should be worried about?
[He teased, pressing slow and light kisses against Aether's lips, his forehead pressed against him. If someone was going to threaten him in the teapot, he figures he should have a warning first.]
[ Aether suppresses another laugh as Alhaitham's lips brush over his; he wants kisses much more than he wants to express his own amusement, but it's hard not to be amused by the scholar's line of questioning. Is he worried that someone is going to attack him in the teapot...? Really, now! ]
If I knew about them, they wouldn't be secret, now would they?
[ Oh, he's definitely playing coy. Aether's perfectly aware that more than a few of his friends might be interested in him — but if they are, then they're not the types who would profess that interest out loud, much less duel Alhaitham for his hand, and the scribe has "won the race," so to speak, by being a bit quicker than the rest to stake his claim. Plus, as previously mentioned — Aether's wanted to claim him, too. That's the more important factor here.
He settles his head on Alhaitham's shoulder, smiling a little smugly up at him, curled up quite comfortably on his lap. ]
I don't think there's anything that you need to worry about... I mean, who could be more impressive than the former Grand Sage of Sumeru?
[ Well, the Iudex of Fontaine and the Guuji of the Narukami Shrine are fairly distinguished personages... but they don't have secret crushes on Aether. At least, the traveler's pretty sure they don't. ]
[Alhaitham stared Aether down, knowing very well that he was playing coy with an answer like that. Alhaitham wouldn't be surprised if he had half of Teyvat giving him the stink eye after this. If he were going to openly state his feelings, it would be that he didn't care if anyone got upset. The only thing he cared about was Aether and having them there as close as he was.
And when Aether curled against him and teasing him, it made him tighten his arms around him, heaving a heavy sigh. He's been claimed by an adorable brat.]
The Iudex of Fontaine with that soft and shy demeanor. A fiery but quiet wine mogul. A revered Yaksha that shows up purely to see you and then vanish. Half of Inazuma's political sphere.
[ He counts them off as if he had been paying attention to who passed through the teapot with a little more attention than he previously mentioned, though his tone was flippant. Aether was in his arms. Why would he care about anyone else at the moment.
His head turned, brushing his nose against the side of his face, leaning his forehead in against his hair.]
Is that how you're going to mention me to your friends now? I guess I'll have to tell everyone you're My Traveler. [His words were warm, breathing in their closeness.]
[ Surprisingly enough, Aether does get very flustered about this, slowly turning a light shade of pink as Alhaitham stares him down with brilliant turquoise eyes. Xiao having a crush on him, he's been aware of through the years, and it's true that he's pretended not to hear Ayaka's bold proclamations here and there — but, no, surely not Neuvillette and Diluc too... surely not? Is Neuvillette really soft and shy around him? Has he never thought about this before... ]
Y-You've got the wrong idea! I'm not that popular...!
[ He is, but the traveler looks cute like this too, finally the one being teased rather than the one doing the teasing. Apparently, Alhaitham's found the key to turning Aether into putty beneath his palms. His soft cheeks are warm against the scholar's nose. ]
But I do like the idea of being your traveler...
[ A slightly bashful giggle escapes him at this proclamation. Oops. ]
[Alhaitham waits until Aether's sputtering and eventual giggles were over, not even aware of the smile on his own face. Aether truly was cute like this, giggling and curled into him, embarrassed by his on popularity. It was virtually impossible not to place a kiss on his cheek when he was flustered like this. ]
There was a day when I counted seventeen people who came and went through the teapot including myself.
Not to mention the times Cyno likes to remind me he's allowed to call you his partner, although he was purposefully being annoying at those points.
The teapot's just a good place to hide away for a little while.
[ Aether's cheek is soft enough that Alhaitham's nose and lips can just sink into it when he moves in for that kiss. It makes the traveler giggle again, soft and lovey-dovey, and when the kisses are over, the blond sort of flops comfortably onto Alhaitham's shoulder again.
He looks up at Alhaitham adoringly and hums an Aranara tune, faintly familiar, perhaps from the deepest half-forgotten recesses of the scholar's childhood memories. He strokes Alhaitham's fine cheekbone again, smiling. ]
Something tells me you're going to turn into a possessive menace. I kind of like that, though.
[The Aranara tune was familiar to him from other children talking about it or seeing them. He can remember Kaveh mentioning them when they were younger, specifically. As for him, he figures he was humbled by life too fast to have seen them like others did. Yet, hearing the tune on Aether's lips brought him back to those simple years of reading by himself while waiting for his grandmother to come home.
He couldn't imagine all the sights Aether's seen, both bad and good. Yet, to still contain enough whimsy to have interacted with the Aranara directly made him more fond.]
I haven't done anything yet and here you are calling me names.
[Alhaitham prefers to think of himself as patiently possessive. He waited to know if Aether felt anything for him while making himself available, and it worked. If the pay-off included getting to remind everyone else that Aether returns those feelings, who was he not to cash in on those benefits?]
Although if you really are into the possessive boyfriend thing, I can lean into it.
[The scribe grins, nuzzling against him while petting his hand down Aether's back. He never thought of himself as the type for affectionate gestures, but being with Aether like they were made it so easy to lean into.]
[ That devilish grin feels like a victory, resounding in Aether's heart. He thinks back to when Alhaitham was a much more reserved man around him, and feels unbearably fond, thinking of how he's slowly discovered the scholar's varying expressions over time. ]
Especially when you're being "bad." It's very attractive. Remember when you did that thing to turn your eyes red and you yelled "Azar!" and clawed at him...?
[ As dramatic as that scene was, it's incredibly funny to think about now and realize that Alhaitham was just faking it the whole time. Why'd he tiger-swipe Azar like a big cat, too?
Maybe he is just a big cat. Aether laughs and nuzzles his nose into the nook where Alhaitham's jaw meets his ear. ]
If you listen to everyone else, I'm always some varying degrees of 'bad'. Especially Kaveh.
[It wasn't on purpose, but sometimes there were some people that acting a certain way toward yielded the best results. It was Kaveh's own fault for being just a great debate partner that showcased a tone of different emotions every time. It was great.
Aether was a bit different. He had the ability to volley back and forth with him. Even if he didn't fully understand the subject, Aether was usually able to keep up, and that meant everything to Alhaitham.]
Well, if you must ask, it was because I couldn't fight him in a true fight without testing how generous Cyno was going to be with assault charges. Azar is as delicate as a scholar with a bloated ego can get, so swiping at him menacingly had to do.
The acting really was what had to sell it.
[ He recalled the events while petting Aether's hair, leaning against the top of his head.]
If you ever need someone with experience acting like a cat, I guess I am at your disposal.
[ Aether smiles again. True, yes, Cyno would have been utterly uncompromising about pressing charges wherever it was warranted; true, yes, if Alhaitham had actually landed a real blow on Azar, he probably would've knocked the old man out.
Still. The traveler rubs beneath Alhaitham's chin, as if he's petting a cat, even as he's the one being petted in turn. ]
Oh? So I can get you to purr for me? Or should I be the one purring for you?
[ He lifts his voice slightly, affects a rather convincing catlike tone: ]
Meow, meow.
[ ...Blame that one woman in Sumeru who keeps teaching him how cats speak. ]
Oh? If you're the one being a cat this time, Maybe I can pet this gorgeous cat until he purrs instead.
[At this point, Alhaitham was already planning to do just that. Teasing him about how good and eager he was to perform only felt fitting, giving how much Aether had loved teasing him since they got there. He deserved to be treated like a cat.
So Alhaitham pets him, running his hand over blond hair, smoothing it in place and scratching lightly at his scalp. The hand trailed down the back of his neck, dragging his fingertip around until he could caress the back of his finger over Aethers jaw and give him chin scritches.]
You're even good at pretending to be a cat. Is there anything you can't do?
[Although usually he would be teasing, in this case, he sounded almost fond of his particularly large lapcat.]
Let me think. [ Aether makes a show of pretending to think, and then says — ] I can't read your Haravatat linguistics papers.
[ A giggle, a laugh at his own joke. A sigh that sounds almost suspiciously like a purr. As much as the traveler teased Alhaitham about being cute earlier, Aether does seem to greatly enjoy being treated like a cat himself, and he keeps looking adoringly up at Alhaitham, like a little golden kitten that keeps pleading for more attention, more pets, more scritches. Who would have thought that the great savior of Sumeru, Nahida's chosen, the First Sage of Buer... would be someone who would be perfectly content to be Alhaitham's lapcat?
Wonder upon wonders. Aether sinks into Alhaitham's embrace still more firmly. ]
Well, I can... but they're so very dense and difficult to parse...
[ He's only being softly whining; he's clearly not very serious. If it were a matter of life and death, Aether would most certainly get through even the most esoteric of Haravatat textbooks. But. ]
Actually, the ones you write are okay. The ones you like to read, though... those would take me a while to digest.

Do you play?
no subject
I don't think I'm mistaken in seeing you play something in the forest before.
no subject
] Not that the other nations didn't — but I left the forest and the desert with so many... memories.
no subject
They still talk about you now and then.
no subject
Here. Do you want to try giving it a shot?
no subject
I'll leave the artistic stuff to you and Kaveh.
no subject
It was fun.
no subject
Coming from the ever perfect Knight of Flowers, I'll take that as a compliment.
[He could imagine most people who knew him would say otherwise. He was good at the things he put his mind to, but his faults and shortcomings were many. Getting Aether to relax doesn't seem to be one of them, at least as far as that look on his face seemed to say. ]
I like seeing you, but don't neglect your duties for it.
[He didn't see any point in beating around the bush. If anyone else wanted to see Aether, they can ask for it themselves. Being able to sit here with him with his headphones off, drinking wine and hearing him laugh, it was a comfort that Alhaitham hadn't realized until that moment that he needed as well.]
no subject
It's nice, really. To have brought him some measure of happiness, however small.
Maybe it's the drink that motivates Aether to be somewhat spoiled, somewhat impetuous — maybe it's only the atmosphere. But, whatever the case, the traveler gently lays his head upon Alhaitham's shoulder and murmurs: ]
I like seeing you too, Haitham. I always do.
[ Then he closes his eyes, still listening to the faint sounds of Kaveh's music from the other room. ]
no subject
Anyone else would have gotten a sarcastic and too pointed retort for such familiarity. For Aether, Haitham merely watched him, looking down at his face, how angelic this little troublemaker could be when he was relaxed. Reaching the opposite hand over, he used the tip of his finger to move Aether's bangs from his face, giving him a better view, letting the finger drag down his cheek and then back to his lap again.]
I didn't think you were the type to get affectionate when you're drunk. Does this always happen, or is this a special occasion?
[The question was mostly out of curiosity. It would be good to know if the Little Star was going to need to be carried out of certain situations before he flirted up the wrong person.]
no subject
Maybe it's only happening because you're a special person.
no subject
Not according to my memory.
[He answers in a lower voice, turning to dip his head to press into Aether's hair. The hand that Aether was touching turns, his fingers brushing against his and slotting to bring their palms together. ]
It's rare that you want to be completely alone with someone.
[It comes out as an observation more than an answer; It was an unasked question that finally had a vague answer. The situation they found themselves in was intentional, but he hadn't pinned down how intentional. It was rare when he was the one who was having to catch up to someone else's thoughts or feelings.]
I was hoping we would be.
no subject
no subject
Not yet.]
no subject
no subject
Collecting property and assets in every nation you visit?
no subject
Come on in — make yourself at home.
no subject
Still, he was silent and allowing, sitting down in one of the chairs once they were inside and alone once more. He wouldn't want to put extra weight on Aether's shoulders anyway. The space was small, but once again he slipped his headphones off and set the whole device on the table, turning to Aether once they were aside and reaching his arms out to him.]
The teapot counts. It's several pieces of property all in one, and not small in any way. The creation of private pockets in space is a phenomenon that has been studied, but to no incredible depths. The scholars of the akademiya lack the ability to replicate it by human, visionless means.
Regardless. [His tone softens.] It's interesting to learn that your accommodations have varied as much as I thought it probably has.
no subject
...I don't need to own things.
Of all the things I've come across, I want you the most.
no subject
In all seriousness, you are welcomed to do so.
no subject
no subject
His eyes were close only momentarily before they were fluttering open once more, seeing Aether come in and closing them yet again. The contract was sealed with the warmth of lips over his. Haitham leaned into the kiss and the comfort of Aether being so much closer than he had been in a long time. His arms remained where they were, content to hold him as they were and linger in that kiss.
His patience (and worry) rewarded him. He was properly claimed.]
Are there any secret crushes others have on you that I should be worried about?
[He teased, pressing slow and light kisses against Aether's lips, his forehead pressed against him. If someone was going to threaten him in the teapot, he figures he should have a warning first.]
no subject
no subject
[His words were warm, breathing in their closeness.]
no subject
Oops. ]
no subject
[Alhaitham waits until Aether's sputtering and eventual giggles were over, not even aware of the smile on his own face. Aether truly was cute like this, giggling and curled into him, embarrassed by his on popularity. It was virtually impossible not to place a kiss on his cheek when he was flustered like this. ]
There was a day when I counted seventeen people who came and went through the teapot including myself.
Not to mention the times Cyno likes to remind me he's allowed to call you his partner, although he was purposefully being annoying at those points.
Now I can just tell him you're mine out loud.
no subject
I kind of like that, though.
no subject
He never thought of himself as the type for affectionate gestures, but being with Aether like they were made it so easy to lean into.]
no subject
no subject
If you ever need someone with experience acting like a cat, I guess I am at your disposal.
no subject
no subject
[At this point, Alhaitham was already planning to do just that. Teasing him about how good and eager he was to perform only felt fitting, giving how much Aether had loved teasing him since they got there. He deserved to be treated like a cat.
So Alhaitham pets him, running his hand over blond hair, smoothing it in place and scratching lightly at his scalp. The hand trailed down the back of his neck, dragging his fingertip around until he could caress the back of his finger over Aethers jaw and give him chin scritches.]
You're even good at pretending to be a cat. Is there anything you can't do?
[Although usually he would be teasing, in this case, he sounded almost fond of his particularly large lapcat.]
sorry for the delay!!
