[they're not really boys anymore. arthur was already growing by the time they were knighted, and he shot up like a roof within the two years after that; now, he's a little broad and stocky, sort of like vane, but smaller. mordred's matured, too, but where arthur turned out like vane, mordred grew up like lancelot — lithe and graceful and distractingly beautiful. and tornelio grew a few centimeters, which apparently means a lot, between harvins.
cruz is tall now, too — the tallest of all four of them — and he's become more muscular, but unlike arthur, the most quiet member of team chickadee retained his slender waist, his bony wrists. he's started growing his hair a bit longer; now, it's long enough that he can tie it back in a small ponytail if he wants to. still, it doesn't really matter. cruz doesn't think much about his appearance, but he's been told a few times that he looks good with glasses, and sometimes, the village girls stare when he's out on patrol.
he pays the staring no mind.]

but cruz doesn't want to become the next captain. not as badly as arthur and mordred do, anyway. he's knows what's going on around him — he knows what's at stake whenever their missions take them directly to the king — but, more than the captaincy, he's started noticing the other knights.
contrary to popular belief, cruz isn't an emotionless astral construct, and he's starting to realize that he likes certain things. he likes the way lancelot's hair falls into his eyes after an intense practice battle. he likes that percival (who visits feendrache, sometimes, when he doesn't have business in wales) has only grown more handsome over the years; he likes the way percival's eyes burn with passion no matter who or what he's looking at. he likes backless erune tops and slender erune waists.
sometimes, he likes to look at mordred.
because an advisor to the king started preaching strange theories about wellness and morale, all the units within feendrache's military now take turns going to a hot springs resort in the mountains. cruz doesn't object. it's good to rest every now and then, he figures, although the problem is that things happen sometimes when one orders large groups of young men to disrobe and share quarters with one another, and it's an open secret that some of the other knights use these getaway trips as an excuse to do things that they normally can't get away with in the barracks.
but cruz isn't planning to go that far. right now, he's just interested in letting his eyes wander over mordred's body as they undress to enter the springs.]
...Arthur and Tornelio have already gone in.
[slowly, he undoes the top buttons of his shirt.]
rip tornelio forever smol
It turned out there was a good chance Mordred would be only slightly taller than he was now. And he ended up being right, Mordred stood at 169 cm. At first Arthur teased him but in the new year he was now telling Mordred that they still had time to grow.
But Mordred knew he probably wouldn't grow, but that was okay (probably). His size and nimble fighting style ended up working together perfectly.
But that wasn't the only thing that changed. Since he had joined the knights in training, Mordred had always been attracted to a certain type of guy. And it just so happened both Vane and Arthur fit that bill perfectly.
But he'd be lying if he said that he wasn't attracted to Cruz either. Especially as they grew older, the two seemed to always catch the other's eye.
Mordred sighed at Cruz's comment, his ears flicking an annoyance.]
Of course, I told Arthur to wait for me! [But of course he didn't, trying to get Arthur to be patient is like trying to get a dog not to eat any of your dinners while you're away.
Mordred starts undoing his armor, sweat glistening on his neck and bare shoulders from his training.]
And you didn't want to join them?
at least he'll be forever cute!
[it's impressive, the fact that cruz can just say things like that without even the barest sense of embarrassment. the blue-eyed knight is as stony-faced as ever as he finishes unbuttoning his shirt and slides it off his shoulders in a swift, efficient movement. his eyes flick over mordred's glistening collarbones, his shimmering skin. the irritated flicking of the ears never ceases to be cute, he decides.
cruz isn't very sweaty, himself. it's an odd thing about him — no matter how hard he's pushed during training, he's rarely sweaty, or even out of breath. cruz isn't human, people like to joke. he's a golem. one of those automatons.]
true!
[Mordred seemed a little surprised but shrugged it off. Just Cruz being Cruz. He didn't notice Cruz's eyes raking over his exposed body as he changed into a towel.]
I'll have to take a shower before we go, do you mind waiting?
no subject
[for a moment, cruz just leans back against the lockers, barefoot but still clad in his usual trousers. he follows mordred's movements with keen interest, indecipherable as always, but after a pause, he slides his pants off his hips.]
...I should shower, too.
no subject
[He asked as he gathered his bucket of washroom items. Of course, he hasn't, he was waiting for Mordred. With his bucket under his arm, he looks back at him.]
Shall I wash your back? [It was common practice between the boys to do so, but Cruz and he had never done it alone together before. Usually, there was a noisy Arthur to lighten everything. ]
no subject
[it's unusual, really, for cruz to say that he likes or dislikes anything, though it's true that he doesn't usually ask anyone to wash his back. arthur and mordred usually wash each other's; sometimes cruz washes tornelio's back if the harvin is having a difficult time, but tornelio has never asked to wash cruz's, maybe because he can't find the nerve to do so, or maybe just that it's easier for cruz to wash himself.
regardless, with a towel wrapped modestly around his waist, cruz takes a seat on a nearby stool. perhaps he's a little tired; he rolls his shoulders as he sits down, making his back muscles flex.]

It felt different compared to Arthur's or Vane's broader back. But it was just as strong and toned as the other knight.]
It feels tense... Have you been stretching?
no subject
[it's not like cruz to be so careless, but then, it's also a lot like cruz to ignore the tensions in his body that are wearing him down. he closes his eyes and leans into mordred's touch, docile as a porcelain doll.]
I haven't had time...
no subject
[He sighs, he'd expect this from Arthur but Cruz always seemed more reasonable. Perhaps he wasn't paying as much attention as Cruz needed him to?
He starts pushing his slender and deft fingers into the tense muscle.]
You and Arthur both need to stretch more or you'll regret it in training. [As blunt and too the point as always. But there was another thing added.]
I'll try to rub out some of the knots later.

[cruz sighs and opens his eyes again. this feels nice. he can't see mordred's face with the other boy standing behind him, it occurs to him once again that mordred really does have a caring personality. i thought so when we first met...
ordinarily, cruz would accept this gentle treatment and leave it at that. today, however, he's feeling a little curious. a little invasive.]
Do you give Arthur massages, too?
