[now that zhongli is no longer obligated to guide liyue on its path down eternal prosperity — and because he (somehow, after six thousand years) really isn't fit to live in mortal society on his own — he's opted to join aether on his journey.

it's on an at-will basis, aether's made that perfectly clear; zhongli is free to leave at any time. but of course the god of contracts is a man of his word, and he isn't going to back out on his word once it's been given. he seems to find even the most menial of tasks novel after his thousands of years of godhood. he likes clearing the fields of hilichurl for local farmers. he enjoys escorting transport balloons to their destinations. even rescuing cats for the adventurer's guild can send the man into a thoughtful reverie.

well, fair's fair, aether figures. at least he's having fun.

aether tries to enjoy his own journey, himself, but... truth be told, it's not all fun and games. now and then, commissioners from the adventurer's guild get belligerent and mean. not everyone in the world is inherently good. other times you take a blow to the head from a treasure hoarder's shovel, you know? sometimes life sucks, in other words. sometimes aether has a terrible, no-good, very bad day.

...which is what brings him to zhongli's inn room as the sun is setting on another day of hard work as an adventurer, absent paimon and with a slightly haggard look on his face. he still has the decency to knock before he enters, though.]

Zhongli... Could I ask you for a favor?
