[the traveling theater troupe is in town! or at least, that's what the familiar colorful tent outside of victor's hollow appears to portend. walk closer, however, and it seems that everyone has gone elsewhere for the moment — everyone besides poor kit, that is, who is pacing outside the tent with some sort of script in hand, reading his lines to himself. he's like to attract hungry monsters at this rate.]
"Did you think to leave without so much as a word? ...You won't be coming back, will you? I know that look in your eyes..."
[strangely, he is speaking in a high falsetto, though he drops it as soon as he hears the sound of approaching footsteps, and notices his guest:]
...Hm? Ah, it's you!
"Did you think to leave without so much as a word? ...You won't be coming back, will you? I know that look in your eyes..."
[strangely, he is speaking in a high falsetto, though he drops it as soon as he hears the sound of approaching footsteps, and notices his guest:]
...Hm? Ah, it's you!

no subject
Oh. Hm. Well, he hopes they've a few days yet before they put on their show. It's not the worst Therion's heard in his day, but it could certainly use a bit of work.
Therion deliberately cracks a few twigs as he makes his approach, not wanting to startle Kit, and when the other man turns, Therion lifts a hand in a lazy wave.]
Not interrupting anything, am I?
no subject
[gesturing loosely around the field, as if trying and failing to find someplace for therion to take a seat, kit eventually gives up this endeavor in favor of brandishing his script. he seems to have the pride of a child who has just been awarded some honor therion should be impressed by.]
The impresario has finally seen fit to give me a speaking role in our next show! ...Though, er... 'tis but a minor part with only seven lines, in truth...
no subject
You don't say.
[Still, Kit is so earnest and clearly excited, however, that even Therion doesn't have it in him to shoot the poor guy down too hard. At least, not yet.
Shifting his weight onto one leg, he cross his arms and lifts his eyebrow (s? the hair makes it impossible to see half his face, as always).]
Well, let me hear it then.
[He's fine standing, if it's only seven lines. Make this good, Kit.]
no subject
[lowering his eyes to look at his seven-line script — never a good sign — kit clears his throat and tries:]
Did you think — that is, did you think —
[he clears his throat a few times, but his voice has broken on the falsetto, and he can't... quite... manage it.]
...
...Perhaps I should take a sip of water.
no subject
[He takes back what he thought earlier about 'not the worse.']
Not sure that'll help.
[It's tempting to leave it there, but well, he's already invested healing grapes and time into Kit, and he doesn't like leaving a job unfinished. Therion didn't help land Kit this job just for him to get fired!]
Take a deep breath. [He pauses to give Kit the chance to do just that.] Who are you playing, anyway? Girl? Little kid? A guy who just got kneed in the balls?
[Honestly, why is Kit doing such a ridiculous voice?]
no subject
[it's not as though kit's face is the problem, but...]
We've only the one actress, you see, and she's already playing the hero's betrothed — so this role fell to me. I did ask the impresario why I could not simply play a younger brother, but he said that audiences don't respond as well to younger brothers. Do you suppose that's true, I wonder?
no subject
Yeah, probably.
[The words come out as a sigh. It's not really important why that might be, but now that he's thinking about it...]
More chance of being rivals for inheritance or... something. [ugh whatever this isn't important]
Anyway, I've never heard a girl's voice crack like that. But... your voice is high enough that it might be fine if you just lift it a bit and, I dunno, be dainty.
no subject
[clearing his throat, kit pulls out of his chest voice, sounding higher-pitched, a tad breathy, just as he promised. his hands clutch at the edges of his cloak — most likely just a product of his own nervousness, but it does seem the sort of thing a tense younger sister might do.]
"Did you think to leave without so much as a word?"
[...he does sound convincingly feminine. perhaps the impresario had a point.]
no subject
Getting there. Keep doing the cloak grab thing and also stand more like a girl. I'm guessing you'll be wearing a dress which'll help, but it never hurts to really sell it.
[Even if you forget your lines or have to improvise, selling it is the most important part!]
no subject
[faintly bemused, kit looks down at his own wide stance, then sheepishly shuffles his feet closer to one another. once he is satisfied with his new, more feminine posture, he nods, holding his hands clasped together in front of his chest like some sort of timid country shepherdess.]
You're very astute, my friend. Have you spent time on the stage yourself, by chance?
no subject
Mm, something like that. It's nothing special, though - just a lot of time spent watching people.
[But enough about him!]
Try it again from the top, and don't worry if the line's aren't perfect. It's the effect that's important.
no subject
True... I suppose it doesn't matter if my character stutters...
[a bout of momentary self-doubt seems to seize the young traveler, however, as he remembers something rather important. kit scuffs his heels against the dirt, looking rather glum indeed.]
...Though this isn't really what I want to be doing.
no subject
Oh? Acting not your dream? Or is it just the role you hate?
no subject
[and traveling with the acting troupe is supposed to give him the opportunity to do so in relative safety. after all, the impresario is no slouch when it comes to fending off monsters, and the lead actress can hold her own in a fight. but even so, trying to play a convincing woman on stage brings kit no closer to his goal...]
I have met people who knew him, or encountered him in their travels at some point... But not a one could tell me where he went or where he was going.
no subject
Maybe he got eaten by a direwolf or something. [Let it never be said that Therion is a tactful bastard.] Plenty of ways for someone to just disappear.
no subject
M-My father would never be eaten by some common monster! He was very strong!
[someone's got daddy issues.... though kit does have to admit that it's been over ten years since he last saw the man in question. it's more likely than not that he's dead.]
...But I know this journey will not end in glad tidings. If he is not dead, then he chose to abandon me. I know that, but still, I... I simply can't rest until I know the manner by which he was slain.
no subject
... what if you never find him? At some point, one way or another, you'll have to stop looking and get on with your own life.
no subject
[that's... a good point. what if kit never finds him? but then, it hardly matters... the house will just lay empty for a few more years... perhaps someone else will find it abandoned and move in... in which case, kit won't even have a home anymore...
but does that really matter?]
...I can't imagine giving up. In that case, I suppose I'd just spend my entire life searching.
no subject
[Well... if he's truly that committed, then that's that.]
Mm. It's your life to spend. [But by his tone, it seems Therion thinks that might be a bit of a waste. Still, far be it from him to tell someone else what to do with their time.]
But, if I were you, I'd stick with the troupe a bit longer. Travel is a lot easier when you know where your next meal's coming from and have some coin to fall back on. Trust me on that.
[He doesn't even know why he's concerned, but... he can't really see Kit lasting too long trying to live off the land, and he doubts the kid'll be so lucky to continue finding people as ... generous as the Impresario.]
no subject
[smiling broadly at his own joke, kit takes a seat on a nearby rock, neatly gathering his cloak beneath him as though he is a dainty lady sweeping up her skirts. at least he's... getting in character?]
What do you do for coin, by the by?
no subject
Absently, Therion toys with the bangle, readjusting where it sits on his wrist so it digs into a different spot.]
Mm, a bit of this and that. I find treasures and sell them, mostly.
no subject
[the sort of thing kit himself might have imagined doing as a boy, honestly. the petite blond practically glows with interest.]
I'm sure you've seen all manner of exciting things! Have you handled a favorite treasure, by any chance?
no subject
Yeah. That's me - a dashing, daring adventurer.
[Well, it's close enough, he supposes. A favorite treasure, though... hm...]
Eh, not really. It's more about the profits and the fun along the way.
no subject
[from anyone else's mouth, that might sound slightly patronizing, but kit sounds like he means it. he probably thinks of therion as a bit of a savior — so very dashing that he doesn't stop to think for a moment that the thief might not be as cool as kit thinks he is.]
What sort of fun do you mean, might I ask? You don't strike me as the sort to enjoy negotiations...
no subject
Nah, the less negotiating the better. It's the chase that's fun - getting past traps and the like to find the treasures.
no subject
Women always tell me to avoid men who love the thrill of the chase... but you seem like a fine sort!
[kit.]
